In a ruling that has implications for Tennessee's ongoing battle over wine in grocery stores, a federal judge in Kentucky just ruled Tuesday afternoon that disallowing wine in Kentucky's grocery stores violates the Equal Protection Clause.

Obviously, this is good news for people in Tennessee who would like to buy wine in grocery stores. It establishes a judicial precedent. The question is now whether Tennessee will authorize wine sales in this legislative session or if lawmakers wait to see how higher courts rule before making a decision.

If it seems inevitable that wine in grocery stores is constitutional, I hope they'll spare taxpayers a protracted legal battle and just go ahead and write the relevant law.
