Jasmin Kaset
Where: The 5 Spot
When: 9 p.m. Thursday, Sept 8

Nashville doesn’t suffer from a shortage of pleasantly voiced women (or men, for that matter) singing tuneful, understated songs with a twinge of wry yearning. But Jasmin Kaset’s Hell and Half of Jordan is one of the better (if relatively unheralded) records to come out of our fair city in recent memory. Vocally, Kaset sometimes recalls the forlorn intimacy of Julie Doiron, while her lyrics can bend toward a kind of magical realism — “The bones are mountains and the stars are upside-down,” she sings on “Mother Don’t” — that fans of Laura Veirs will appreciate. She makes these proclivities her own with arresting melodies, evocative imagery and meticulously unraveling arrangements, precisely executed by her able backing band, which features a Non-Commissioned Officer or two.
