Pick of the Day: Kenny Vaughan Organ Trio at Ovvio Arte

Kenny Vaughan Organ Trio
Where: Ovvio Arte, 425 Chestnut St.
When: Fri., Jan. 21, 8 p.m.

For years now, Kenny Vaughan has been one of Marty Stuart’s Fabulous Superlatives (ironically, a band name that’s actually an understatement). But the seemingly omnipresent guitarist — who can go from spot-on Luther Perkins licks to incendiary avant-rock freak-outs in the blink of an eye — finds time to do numerous other sideman gigs and solo projects.

Among these are the all-improv trio Funkwrench, trad-blues act The Collusions (with G. Love drummer Jeffrey “Houseman” Clemens), and now this trio with organist Charles Treadway and drummer Jon Radford. Treadway’s swirling B-3 maelstrom could frequently be heard rocking the Hillsboro Village Sportsman’s Grille during a popular Wednesday night residency in recent years, and the versatile Radford’s slinky grooves have powered funk powerhouse The Dynamites, folk-rockers Drew Holcomb and the Neighbors and even Lower Broad honky-tonk mainstay Don Kelley.

Vaughan says not to expect the traditional jazz organ trio. But we’re big fans of all three individually, though we’ve never heard them together — it sounds like a treacherous high school chem-lab experiment where some stoner science geek mixes three volatile compounds just to see what happens. All we’re saying is, it could be explosive. Wear goggles. And skip dinner: Gitano Herrera will be dishing out Argentinean delights from his mobile Buenos Aires Grill at both shows.
