UPDATE, 8:16 p.m. May 2: WSMV-Channel 4 is reporting that First Avenue and MetroCenter are being evacuated. A new shelter has been opened at Bellevue Middle School. Metro residents are also being urged to conserve water.

UPDATE, 7:49 p.m. May 2: WTVF-Channel 5 is reporting the Opryland Hotel's 1,500 guests are under evacuation.

UPDATE, 4:39 p.m. May 2: Mayor Karl Dean is asking Middle Tennesseans to stay in their homes tonight. Officials hope the Cumberland River will crest at 48 feet, but WSMV-Channel 4 reported that some sources have already estimated its level near 50 feet, and waters are lapping at the edge of First and Broadway. (Fifty-five feet would mean significant downtown flooding.) Flood waters are expected to recede starting tomorrow, but even though the rain has largely stopped, waters will continue to rise for hours at Mill Creek and other hard-hit locations.

MTA bus and train service has been temporarily suspended. To volunteer aid in the recovery effort, go to Hands On Nashville. Here's the most recent list of road closings as of 1:15 p.m. today:

Having just driven home past heretofore unimaginable sights — the Dairy King on East Thompson in Woodbine up to its rafters in water, a car bobbing like a cork alongside; dozens of residents gathered on street corners watching flood waters wash across Murfreesboro Road — we're opening this thread in the wake of today's devastating flooding so people can check in, post updates and links to photos, let others know their location, etc. Please post any kind of message here, and we'll check in throughout the night.

We're also hearing astonishing stories of bravery and mobilized effort as Nashvillians have stepped up to help their neighbors. My sister-in-law was among a group of homeowners in a Smyrna suburb who saved several horses whose owners are out of town; the same group managed to push a family's stalled car to higher ground just minutes before the flood waters would have claimed it.

WTVF-Channel 5 is doing an excellent job covering the disaster. (WKRN-Channel 2, by contrast, is showing Meet the Fockers.) Through them, we learned the American Red Cross has set up these emergency shelters tonight to handle Middle Tennesseans displaced by the flooding:

Here's a link to the Tennessee Emergency Management Agency (which has declared a Level 3 state of emergency) for updates throughout the night.

Stay safe, everyone, and let us know what you're seeing — and how you're doing.
