Still riding high on last year's multiple-Grammy-nominated debut LP Boys and Girls — which, if you didn't know, was recorded here in Nashville at Andrija Tokic's The Bomb Shelter — Athens, Ala.'s breakout soul-infused blues rockers Alabama Shakes have just announced a handful of upcoming tour dates. Among the slated dates is a Sept. 21 gig at local amphitheater The Woods at Fontanel; tickets for that one will be available via fan-club pre-sale on June 24, with a general on-sale date of July 12.
The Shakes are native Alabamans — nominally, spiritually and of course geographically — and they've called on their fellow Cotton State homeboys The Dexateens to appear in support at that Woods gig and others. Shakes frontwoman Brittany Howard & Co. are also showing their Nashville ties, though, calling on Music City's own Majestico (who also recorded at The Bomb Shelter and share at least one member with Howard's other band, Thunderbitch) to open up. Capacity at The Woods is 4,500 — space-wise, it's quite an upgrade from other Music City venues Alabama Shakes have played over the past two years, among them The Basement, The 5 Spot, Mercy Lounge and, hell, even the Ryman. Next stop, Bridgestone Arena? If The Black Keys can do it, who says the Shakes can't?
