Weekend Round-Up: Demolition Man Style

I was lounging around the house last weekend when I happened to realize that Demolition Man was on television, and you'd better believe I watched every second of that sci-fi-action-comedy-garbage romp from 1993. Denis Leary basically doing his stand-up routine, but slightly adjusted to be "futuristic"? Wesley Snipes with bleach-blond hair? Constant on-the-nose winking at bits of strictly 1993-ish pop culture? More plot holes than actual plot? Sylvester Stallone nude and Taco Bell product placement? Rob Schneider for some reason? What's not to like! When music listings editor Adam Gold randomly suggested that — because "it's, you know, too cold outside right now" — I base this week's round-up style on the part in which Sylvester Stallone is cryogenically frozen, I let the God of Coincidence and Terrible Cinema guide my hand. And here we are.

But here, 20 years after Demo Man's release — when Taco Bell is still super-shitty and people don't use virtual-reality helmets to bang — we've got some pretty promising live music on our hands. Tonight you're looking at: the Planned Parenthood benefit with Chelsea Crowell, Rosanne Cash, Rodney Crowell and more at The Stone Fox; Purity Ring at Cannery; Alanna Royale's release show at The Basement; the Monterrey Jazz Fest on Tour at Schermerhorn; and more. Tomorrow you've got: Yo La Tengo at Mercy Lounge; Jon Spencer Blues Explosion with Cheap Time at Exit/In; Holy Mountain Top Removers & Co. at The End; Datsik's tour stop at Marathon; The Boom Bap's fifth anniversary at The 5 Spot; Penicillin Baby and some others at Springwater; Derek Hoke with Denney and the Jets and Ranch Ghost at The Stone Fox; and plenty more. Have a look at the rest — compiled by Adam "Sgt. John Spartan" Gold — after the jump. Let us know what we missed, and have yourselves a utopian weekend.
