The American Bang/Cadillac Black frontman has scored himself a chart-topping country hit this week with “You Gonna Fly” — a song he penned with LoCash Cowboys’ Preston Bust and Chris Lucas for superstar Keith Urban.
As noted in a status update Johntson posted earlier today (and screen-capped at right) America’s Music Charts — a website that tracks spins on the FM airwaves — currently has the song as the nation’s No. 1 country single. And the song will also hold the No. 1 position on Billboard’s Country Songs chart, which publishes on Thursday.
A Southern rocker by night, by day Johnston works as a professional songwriter for Sony/ATV Music Publishing, whose roster also includes those wily cowboys of the LoCash frontier.
Here’s what Cash Cow Preston Bust told Taste of County of the high-flying collaboration:
The night before we wrote, I tried to research Jaren a little bit because I wanted to know what kind of style his band had It was a really cool, fresh rock ‘n’ roll sound. I thought how cool would it be to write a song and get it on American Bang’s next album. I began to think of lyrics and hooks and melodies that lent itself to the rock world. … Meanwhile, Jaren had been listening to some LoCash Cowboys stuff and was probably trying to get a LoCash cut. I guess that’s what you get when you mix American Bang with Locash: a rockin’ Keith Urban song.
Lucas went on to tell Taste that the trio held its writing session at Johnston’s Music City crib where “the incense was burning” and the three bonded immediately.
“Now I never write without incense burning,” he says.
That magic moment actually transpired a couple years ago. "You Gonna Fly" was actually released last October as the fourth single from Urban's 2010 Get Closer LP
