By Lightning! Record Release Feat. Cortney Tidwell and Glossary Tomorrow Night at The Basement

Local power-poppy indie-rock clan By Lightning!, as a band, hasn't been on the local scene for a long time. As individuals, however, they've been filling dives and clubs and basements as members of De Novo Dahl, Dixie Dirt, Hands Down Eugene, Imagine Asians and more for years. Tomorrow night at The Basement, frontpersons Kat Brock and Joel J. Dahl — plus their seasoned five-person crew of backers — will celebrate the release of their brand-new Left Hand Right Hand. But I don't need to tell you that — Mr. Adam Gold says it all in his Critic's Pick, which you can read below. And above, you can enjoy the fluid moves of By Lightning! drummer Jerry Pentecost, as he both pops and locks in most dope fashion. Anyway, on to Pick Country:

Featuring four former members of defunct Nashville indie-pop clan De Novo Dahl and former Dixie Dirt singer Kat Brock, relative local-rock newcomers By Lightning!’s debut LP, Left Hand Right Hand, sounds, perhaps as you’d expect, like a cross between De Novo Dahl and Dixie Dirt. And that’s not a bad thing at all. Joel Dahl and Serai McAnulty’s revved-up hooks are served well by Brock’s rollicking-to-reflective juke-joint Americana. The result is a record rife with baroque pop that effortlessly shifts from a speedy, me-against-The-Man power-pop fist-pumper like “New Union Tune” to the closing country weeper “City.” Opening for By Lightning! are the inimitable Cortney Tidwell and Glossary, which makes for one helluva a Music City-centric bill that’s equal parts old guard and new blood. —ADAM GOLD
