Well, when I spoke of Big Apple-bound Nashvillians heading to CMJ last year, I noted the fact that the festival's epic lineup is "a pretty amazing place to start if you want to know the way tides are turning band-name-wise." At CMJ 2010, everybody was "Gold This" and "Golden That." As always, bands with animals and trees in their names dominate — from Red Pony Clock, Sea of Bees, Tunabunny, Caged Animals, Built by Animals, Slow Animal and Spirit Animal to Scattered Trees, Dylan Trees and Tall Tall Trees — but here's the real trend: existential statements of who "We Are." (Examples: We Are Scientists, We Are Augustines, We Are the Woods, We Are the Hartmans, We Are All Savages.)

Sub-par non-Nashvillian band names aside, some of our cherished locals are once again heading New York way in order to perform as part of CMJ. (The festival, as you may know, began yesterday and runs through Saturday, Oct. 22.) Among our Nashvillian ambassadors this year are punk and garage rockers like PUJOL, Diarrhea Planet, Turbo Fruits and The Clutters, not to mention pop and indie outfits like Tristen, Nikki Lane, Keegan DeWitt, The Kopecky Family Band and States (not to be confused with fellow locals We Were the States, who used to be called The States, and also, past tense form of "We Are"!) After the jump, see a list of when and where the aforementioned locals will be playing this week. If you're up that way and have the opportunity, get out and see some Music City denizens stretching their wings in the Big Apple. Did we miss your band? Let us know.
