As you folks may have noticed, we at the Scene/Cream are taking the holiday off — well, taking off from blogging, at the very least. This rainy Labor Day finds yours truly listening to Hands Off Cuba's new EP and laboring over a feature about Broken Social Scene and TV on the Radio's upcoming appearance at The Ryman.
But all that is beside the point. The point is here: Local funnyman Steve Lee is hosting tonight's installment of Mercy Lounge's beloved 8 off 8th series. (He's the guy who tried and succeeded at winning that lamp jingle competition, by the way.) Lee's brand-new kids' band, Yumza!, will be performing, along with Chrome Pony (I saw them last night, and they make strong two-piece garage pop), Ponychase (Jesus and Mary Chain-esque synth pop that The Spin loves), The Lowry Sisters, Marc Scibilia, Maureen Murphy, Oh Dang Lo Mein (one of my favorite local band names) and Daniel Ellsworth and the Great Lakes. As always, this one's free. So if you're not chained to your desk writing about post-rocky indie ensembles or watching science fiction military dramas, then hit this one.
