If there are three things we at the Cream like, they are, in no particular order: Hanukkah, Buddy Holly and Paul Burch. So the fact that Mr. Burch, with the help of his WPA Ballclub, will be playing — and making available for free download — a different Buddy Holly song for each night of Hanukkah 2010 comes as welcome news on this, the first day of the festival of lights.

Starting sundown December 1st, paulburch.com will stream PB & WPA performing a Buddy Holly song for each night of Hanukkah. Why? Because we love Buddy Holly—that's why. All 8 songs will be available for download FREE from sundown until midnight December 9th, the last night [of] Hanukkah. Thanks for listening and have a great holiday season. As for Xmas, we have something special in mind for that as well. Well...all right!

He's pulled this sort of thing before! (Incidentally, an interesting talk about the Americanization of Hanukkah this morning on Burch-friendly NPR.) You may remember that Buddy Holly recorded a few takes of "That'll Be the Day" at the Quonset Hut in Nashville, that those tapes went straight into cold storage and that a greedy-ass exec at Decca named Paul Cohen told Holly he couldn't have his own recordings. But you can have these.

You only need four chords, according to Gary Busey, who looks about as much like Buddy Holly as I look like Jake Gyllenhaal:

I'm pretty sure it's gonna be better when Paul Burch does it.
