Who here likes Stax? How about Norway? In that case, NPT has just the thing for you on Thursday evening. Sweet Soul: Stax/Volt Revue--Live in Norway 1967 will be airing at 7 p.m. on March 12. From the good folks over at NPT Channel 8:
[The film] features performance footage from the last leg of the Stax/Volt Revue's European tour -- a rare package tour of artists from the legendary record label. Otis Redding delivers jaw-dropping versions of "Shake," "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction," the only known filmed concert performance of "Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa-Fa (Sad Song)," and a staggering, six-minute version of "Try A Little Tenderness," during which he comes back for four encores! This is one show you won't want to miss!
A copy of the Otis Redding Live in London and Paris album showed up at the office not too long ago. The shows featured on the disc were also recorded during the European Stax/Volt Revue tour of '67, and I must say Booker T. and the MGs hold it down. They just don't make house bands like that anymore. Though, having seen the Dap-Kings a handful of times, I must admit those dudes manage to come awfully close. Well, I'm going to stop talking about Soul before I reveal how meager my body of knowledge truly is and someone like Maloney schools my sorry ass. Tune in Thursday night.
