In the 1970s, Ralph Bakshi was pretty much a genre unto himself: ambitious animated features for adults, mixing in live action and rotoscoping as the decade progressed. (Seek out Heavy Traffic and Coonskin, two of the most original — and at the time controversial — movies of the early ’70s.) Today at 2 p.m., the downtown Nashville Public Library is hosting a free DVD screening of Bakshi's 1978 animated version of The Lord of the Rings, and as a special treat the library interviewed Bakshi for its "Legends of Film" podcast series.

Bakshi has something of a prickly reputation, but Popular Materials library staffer Bill Chamberlain said the famed animator could not have been more welcoming or generous with his time. Check the podcast out here.
