Last year's retrospective of master Japanese animator Hayao Miyazaki and his Studio Ghibli was one of the most successful such series in Belcourt history — not just by the standard of attendance, which ran in the thousands, but also by word of mouth and audience enthusiasm. I'm sorry to say I missed almost the entire run, which featured some of the rarest titles in the Ghibli catalog.

The good news is that by popular demand, The Belcourt is bringing back a kind of abbreviated Ghibli greatest-hits series. It starts March 16 with an audience favorite, Castle in the Sky, and closes April 27 with another, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind; in between are canonical titles such as My Neighbor Totoro (March 23), Spirited Away (March 30) and Kiki's Delivery Service (April 6). All screenings will be 10 a.m. Saturdays, as part of the theater's expanded programming for kids.

Consider it a lead-up to the new Ghibli release, From Up on Poppy Hill, co-scripted by Miyazaki and directed by his son Goro. News reports also have at least two new Ghibli films due this year, one each from studio co-founders Miyazaki and Iwao Takahata (Grave of the Fireflies). Below, the full schedule.
