Metro Arts is unveiling a new public sculpture on Thursday at 4:45 p.m. "Aileron" was created by Atlanta-based blacksmith Michael Dillon, and Mayor Karl Dean will be there to help celebrate. The public is invited to attend, and encouraged to bring a picnic along and participate in children's activities starting at 4.
From the press release:
The sculpture is a dynamic piece of forged iron that pays tribute to Sylvan Park neighborhood history. "Aileron" is the term for the fixed wings on a biplane that control movement and banking. The work serves as a tribute to the McCabe’s early days as one of Nashville first airfields.
Watch the above video for a behind-the-scenes look at the making of "Aileron." It's just a piece of the much larger puzzle, but somehow watching Dillon operate that massive machine and seeing how bright the steel bar glows really brings the sculpture down to earth. I can't wait to see how it's turned out.
