Ben Venom makes quilts out of heavy metal T-shirts. Before dismissing that as a straight-to-Urban Outfitters trend craft, you've got to see this stuff. The quilts are huge, intricate, and way too brutal for mass consumption. His artist statement calls it a “collision of Iron Maiden Metal ballads with the outrageous stage antics of Ozzy Osbourne.”
The San Francisco-based Venom is coming to Nashville in June to give an artist's talk at The Frist and lead a two-day quilt-making workshop in conjunction with Watkins. I've already cleared my calendar those few days (June 14-16) and am taking my sewing machine out of storage for the occasion. Watch a video of Venom and scroll through images of his work after the jump.
