One of the biggest sources of buzz at this week's upcoming Tales of the Cocktail event in New Orleans is the new movie Hey Bartender, which is opening around the country in limited release. According to the official release, this documentary "tells the story of the renaissance of the bartender in the era of the craft cocktail and features the most famous bartenders in the world, along with unprecedented access to the most exclusive bars in New York City and commentary from Graydon Carter, Danny Meyer and Amy Sacco."
You can expect to see lots of handlebar mustaches and suspenders among the cast, but if you can look past that, you'll discover the passion and creativity that many of these mixologists pour into your tasty drinks. As bartenders gain acclaim as "beverage chefs," it's fascinating to see the parallels between restaurant chefs and mixologists as they return to craft ingredients, historical recipes and locavorism. (locabebism?)
Above is a short trailer to give you a taste:
The movie screens at 5:10 and 9 p.m. at The Belcourt on Monday and Tuesday, July 15-16. To celebrate opening night, Jon Yeager of Pour Taste will be mixing up some extra-special cocktails just down the street from the theater at Zumi Sushi. Starting at 7 on Monday night, Yeager will offer some of the same sorts of classic drinks that are featured in the movie, so drop in for a snort before or after the Monday showings.
