Local owner and operator Sam Boyer announces that the new Two Boots is opening Wednesday, July 10. The kickoff will be 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, with planned hours of 4 to 9 p.m. this Thursday, 4 to 1 a.m. this Friday and Saturday, and regular hours starting Monday.
Two Boots has taken over the site where The Great Escape presided for many years at 1927 Broadway in Midtown, selling comic books, records and more to a couple generations of Nashvillians. (The Great Escape is now on Charlotte Pike.)
Founded in New York's East Village in 1987, Two Boots has its own whimsical zest for pop culture. Founders Phil Hartman and Doris Kornish came from a background of indie filmmaking, and the Avenue A location in New York still includes a video store.
Two Boots pizza names are nods to characters like The Dude from The Big Lebowski and Mr. Pink from Reservoir Dogs. (Not the other "Mr. Pink," alter ego of Scene editor Jim Ridley.)
The Nashville restaurant is the 16th outpost of Two Boots. (The rest are in New York, a few other spots in the Northeast and in Los Angeles) This is the first location in the South.
Two new pizzas have been created for Nashville:
“The Kitty” honors country legend Kitty Wells; it's topped with hot chicken supplied by Midtown neighbor Hattie B’s, blue cheese dressing and jalapenos on a white pie.
“The Great Escape” features homemade andouille meatballs, pepperoni, fresh basil, and ricotta cheese.
All Two Boots locations have a big local art component. Here's what we know about the Nashville joint: Nashville artists Sheila B and Pat Jackson painted the exterior with a splashy mural featuring The Dude, Tony Clifton, Mr. Pink and others. East Nashville artist Melanie Guion created one of her “shoe shrines” for Two Boots, representing New Orleans and New York City.
The restaurant fills 2,000 square feet of indoor and covered patio space; there are 50 seats, along with standing room at the pizza bar. Here's an exciting new morsel: Two Boots aims to start delivering pizzas in late August, to neighborhoods including West End, Belmont and 12South.
