At the risk of spamming our readers with a week of heavy barbecue coverage, we report that Jack Cawthon (one of the pitmasters interviewed in today's BBQ Roundtable issue of The City Paper) launched his third location this week. Now called Jack Cawthon's Bar-B-Que (as opposed to just plain "Jack's") the new joint is at the corner of Charlotte Avenue and 16th Avenue North.

The restaurant may be considered a pioneer in an up-an-coming part of the city — the nexus of North Nashville, Midtown and downtown (you can see Capitol Hill in this picture), just a block or two from the interstate. And if some folks get their way, the mayor's proposed bus rapid transit line, The Amp, will trundle down Charlotte instead of West End.

Jack's is noted for having a geographically broad barbecue menu, with Tennessee pulled pork shoulder, Texas-style beef brisket, St. Louis-style pork ribs and smoked chicken and Texas sausage. When I stopped by this week, they had 10 or so side dishes on the cafeteria line to round out a barbecue platter, including the expected slaw and potato salad, green beans and mac-and-cheese and also a few more novel choices like mashed potatoes and brown gravy.

There's a fairly expansive dining room, and a covered dining porch as well. Sure to be handy for downtown commuters heading home are the takeout selections of meat by the pound and the slate of family meals, like a whole smoked chicken pack with two pints of veggies and extras, which serves four, for $18.99.

The new Jack Cawthon's Bar-B-Que is at 1601 Charlotte Ave. The phone number is 341-0157. (The other locations are on Lower Broadway and West Trinity Lane.)
