Terrazzo in the Gulch Getting New Restaurant, Prima, From Miranda Whitcomb Pontes

More news from the ever-evolving Gulch: Miranda Whitcomb Pontes, the restaurateur behind Burger Up, the popular farm-to-table burger spot in 12South, is joining forces with chef Sal Avila to open a new restaurant, Prima, in the ground floor of the Terrazzo condo and retail development on Division Street.

The project is under the banner of a new restaurant group, Community Hospitality LLC, which teams Pontes and entrepreneur Jim Lewis, a technology and health care veteran who is managing partner and CEO of Cumberland Consulting Group.

Avila, meanwhile, is a respected local chef whose rich résumé includes stints cooking at such diverse places as City House, 360 Bistro and his own Jay Jay's Good Food Truck.

The disappointing news is that Prima isn't expected to open until 2014. In the meantime, Pontes — who also launched pioneering 12South coffeehouse Frothy Monkey in 2004 before selling that business to associates — is busy creating her next project, Josephine, which is going into the 12 South Flats luxury apartment project in 12South. The target opening date for Josephine is this fall.

Prima will have a "modern fine-dining menu ... with "a variety of international flavors" and an "advanced wine program." Avila says the cuisine will be "farmer-defined," with an emphasis on fresh local vegetables.

"With so much access to incredible local produce, our aim is to make the often-overlooked vegetable dishes the most important component on the plate," Avila says. "The entrees will be subtly crafted to complement the rustic vegetable sides."

Prima is expected to open at 700 12th Ave. S. in the Gulch sometime in early 2014.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (May 29, 2013) — A neighborhood known for its unique culture and cuisine, The Gulch will welcome new restaurant, Prima in the early part of 2014. Located under the Terrazzo, a mixed-use development, Prima is set to become the city’s newest hotspot with its advanced wine program and a modern fine-dining menu that highlights locally-sourced produce and a variety of international flavors. The Prima culinary team will be led by chef Sal Avila. “The menu will be simple, controlled, refined, and farmer-defined,” said chef Avila. “With so much access to incredible local produce, our aim is to make the often-overlooked vegetable dishes the most important component on the plate.
