In the first of 10 planned new locations in Nashville, Penn Station East Coast Subs is opening a store tomorrow in Hermitage at 5205 Old Hickory Blvd. This restaurant will join two other Middle Tennessee locations in Murfreesboro and Bellevue.

With more than 235 franchises in 13 states, Penn Station is one of the fastest-growing fast casual chains in the country. They are known for their Cheesesteak Sub sandwich, served on freshly baked French bread. Penn Station also serves a variety of hot and cold subs, as well as fresh, hand-cut, made-to-order French fries, hand-squeezed lemonade made several times daily and chocolate chunk cookies baked fresh in the restaurant.

While I'll leave it to the real cheesesteak experts to comment on the authenticity of Penn Station's version (hopefully after they've actually tried it), I am intrigued by a sub shop that also serves french fries. I do grow weary of a certain subterranean train chain where all the sandwiches taste the same and the addition of a bag of Baked Lays does little to improve the experience. But some good hot fries ... now you're talkin'!

If you get there before I do, let us know in the comments what you think of Penn Station Subs and whether they are a welcome addition to the Nashville food scene. Fingers crossed!
