Savor Nashville Returns for Second Year May 19-20



Last year's first Savor Nashville event was quite ambitious, with six James Beard-winning guest chefs visiting town for a VIP celebrity dinner and a big shrimp-and-grits cooking competition the morning after the dinner. This year, they're scaling it back just a little bit, but it should still be a great weekend of eating.

This year's Savor Nashville Celebrity Chef Dinner is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Hutton Hotel. The dinner will feature visiting chefs James Boyce of Cotton Row, Pane e Vino and Commerce Kitchen in Huntsville, Ala., and Bruce Moffett of Barrington’s Restaurant in Charlotte, N.C. Chef Boyce is a frequent contributor to Martha Stewart's magazine and food shows as well as the head chef in the best restaurant in northern Alabama. Chef Moffett has been named Restaurateur of the Year by Charlotte Magazine and has been nominated as a semi-finalist in the Best Chef: Southeast category of the James Beard Foundation Awards.

The award-winning chefs will prepare a high-end multiple course dinner with wine pairings from Cultivate Wines. Guests will enjoy performances from Grammy Award-winning songwriters Tim Nichols and Marv Green, and a silent auction benefiting Hands On Nashville.

For the competitive cooking component this year, Savor Nashville has crafted a "Challenge to the Chefs," taking place at noon Sunday, May 20 at Union Station Hotel. Local chefs will compete by creating unique dishes that must feature at least one of these Tennessee products: Benton’s Bacon, GooGoo Clusters and Jack Daniels Tennessee Honey whiskey.

The chefs throwing their toques in the ring include Jeremy Barlow of Tayst and SloCo, Thomas Cook of Prime 108, Brandon Frohne of Rutland Place Catering and Nashville Urban Gardeners, Giovanni Giosa of Porta Via Italian Kitchen, Matthew Lackey of Flyte World Dining, Deb Paquette of Etch, Kevin Ramquist of F. Scott’s Restaurant and Jazz Bar, Jarvan Springer of West End Café, Robert Spinelli of Perl Catering, Keith West of Puckett’s Grocery and Restaurant, Toby Willis of Nashville City Club and Robbie Wilson of Kayne Prime, Tavern, Whiskey Kitchen and Virago.

A panel of expert judges will sample the offerings and declare a winner. Chefs Boyce and Moffett will lead the jury, which includes Tyler Brown of Capitol Grille, Beth Sachan of and some hack who writes for Bites.

But you don't have to be a judge to enjoy the chef's creations. All attendees will be able to sample the dishes, and it's highly unlikely anyone will go home hungry. Plus there will be a Bloody Mary bar with drink tickets included in your admission. Individual tickets are $150 for the Celebrity Chef Dinner and $35 for Challenge to the Chefs. An all-access pass is available for $175 person. Tables of 10 for the Celebrity Chef Dinner are available for $1,250, providing a savings of $250.
