It has been, like, a month now since I dined at Gerst Haus with my kids and circled the room in a conga line of chicken dancers, and THAT DAMN SONG IS STILL IN MY HEAD. (Bock, bock, bock, bock!)
Also still stuck in my head is the platter of succulent grilled quail with sides of red cabbage and warm potato salad. You can get those delicacies throughout the week at Gerst Haus, but you can only get the chicken dance on weekend nights.
For all you diners who watched my family flapping our wings, I'd apologize — but, admit it, you knew what you were signing up for. And as far as family-friendly dining goes, it is pretty awesome.
If you haven't tried the Gerst Haus on a Friday or Saturday night when the polka bands play, treat yourself soon to this unusual German-flavored Nashville tradition. Meanwhile, what other audience-participation dining events would you recommend?
