Sharon Johnson, a name familiar among the high-dollar fundraiser set for her exquisite catering service, has opened Southern Bred restaurant in East Nashville. Far from a black-tie affair, Southern Bred offers lunch and dinner with a down-home roster of fried chicken, chicken and dumplings, pork chops, catfish, sandwiches, soups and salads. Meat-and-three--including choice of mashed potatoes, pinto beans, fried okra and fried green tomatoes, among other Southern staples--clocks in at $9. The four-veggie plate is $7.
We haven't been to Southern Bred yet, but the menu alone is enough to entice us. Laid out like a simple genealogical diagram, the elegant family-tree graphic conveys a subtle understanding of what makes the South tick. That--along with Johnson's distinguished record as a caterer--bodes well for the restaurant. As always, if you get to Southern Bred before we do, please report back on Bites.
Located at 1048 East Trinity Lane, Southern Bred serves lunch and dinner 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.
