Blair Nightcap Series: The Music of Stravinsky

When: Tue., Sept. 14, 8 p.m. 2010

Igor Stravinsky's long and productive career can sometimes seem like just one unexpected swerve after another. Violinist Carolyn Huebl and pianist Mark Wait will offer some insight into the composer's “neoclassical” phase when they perform and discuss two of the delightful and accessible works that appeared in Stravinsky's duo recitals with violinist Samuel Dushkin in the 1930s — works that the pair will soon record for release on the Naxos label. Huebl's sensitive, interpretive skill is probably best known through her work with the Blair School of Music's Blakemore Trio — which incidentally made its New York debut at the Kaufman Center earlier this year. And anyone who thinks of Wait strictly as an administrator may be pleased to discover what a heavyweight pianist Blair's dean actually is. This performance begins Blair's 2010-11 “Nightcap” series of concert/lecture combos and will eventually be televised on WNPT, though of course there's nothing like hearing it in person. Admission is free.
