Black Tar Prophet Album Release feat. Destroyer of Light, Sovereign & Widower

When: Fri., April 25, 10 p.m. 2014

Panic-inducing, claustrophobic and terrifying aren’t usually superlatives you throw around when it comes to music — especially when one is attempting to endorse said music — but that’s Black Tar Prophet’s new album Deafen in a nutshell. Listen, I don’t like doom metal because I’m looking for puppies and rainbows and soft clouds of joy sprinkling raindrops of happiness — I want an existential dread suffocating me with its icy grip, and damned if Deafen doesn’t deliver. The local duo makes a mighty vicious noise, pushing the limits of fuzz and distortion to create an sound that is hypnotic and intense in all the right ways. The Prophet boys show no mercy, never pulling punches or delivering a note with anything less than face-peeling brutality. SEAN L. MALONEY
