Amen Dunes w/AXXA/ABRAXAS & Adam Schatz

When: Thu., June 26, 9 p.m. 2014

From self-imposed exiles in China to label troubles and brotherly disputes, Damon McMahon has traveled a long way to be with us in Nashville on Thursday evening. Indeed, his fine new psych-folk album Love, featuring contributions from Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Iceage members, may’ve put him on the radar of many a savvy music fan for the first time — but this is far from McMahon’s first rodeo. Astralwerks released a poorly received solo record of his in the mid-Aughts on the heels of the dissolution of INOUK, the songwriter’s once-hyped rock band, and Amen Dunes has been around in one form or another since late 2006. Now planted back in New York City, McMahon has said in interviews that he’s finally found his purpose for being a musician, which is “to be of service to people,” and to follow in the footsteps of great American “spiritual visionaries” like Elvis, Marvin Gaye and Jerry Garcia, who McMahon says visited him in a dream to convey this simple yet profound sentiment: “I relate to you.” At times he can sound a tad like the acid-dropping pseudo-philosopher we all knew in English Lit 101, but McMahon’s work backs the mystique. Get on board. Axxa/Abraxas and Adam Schatz open. RYAN BURLESON
