Nashville-based psychiatrist Dr. Jon Draud is passionate about both medicine and African art. It seems only natural that he would marry these loves, focusing on the how various African cultures approach illness and healing through his collection of cultural artifacts. Including nearly 150 objects, African Art: The Collection of Jon Draud, currently on view at the Tennessee State Museum, includes numerous rare pieces from the 19th and 20th centuries. Droud bought his first piece of African art more than two decades ago, and he’s currently publishing a book on the collection. “The book and collection are both focused around phases of life including birth, maternal child bonding, rituals related to adolescence and coming of age, and then, finally, pieces which relate to death and the afterlife,” explains Droud.
