A Christmas Carol

When: Fridays-Sundays, 7:30 p.m. Continues through Dec. 21 2013

If you like your Dickens in large supply, Nashville’s the place to be this weekend. Multiple versions of the master’s seasonal classic are popping up on stage: Studio Tenn launches an elaborate production at TPAC; there’s a murder mystery dinner theater adaptation at a couple locations; and former Nashville-based actor Mark Cabus returned to town last week to kick off his time-honored one-man presentation. Then there’s Actors Point Theatre, whose artistic director Greg Wilson has transported the tale to the California Dust Bowl of the 1930s as a group of troubadours performs the script with “found” set pieces, props and costumes. Wilson’s cast of seasoned film, TV and stage veterans includes JJ Rodgers and Sam Dalton, along with Shannon Spencer, Jaye Phelps, Jayla Palmer, Jordan Stephens and others. (The production will be performed at two separate locations over two weekends.) Returning for a second consecutive year is SistaStyle Productions’ contemporary update on the story, which features one Eberta Scrooge, a gun-toting badass. Revised for 2013, Mary McCallum’s play finds the government just returning from a shutdown, Obamacare in a state of confusion — and Eberta (the energetic Tamiko Robinson) in a state of agitation. In 2012’s inaugural mounting, Dickens’ familiar tropes found their way neatly to the fore. McCallum aims for more of the same with her timely holiday twist.
