Extremely NSFW Trailer for Tonight's 'Coffin Joe' Attraction at Logue's

In 1963, actor, screenwriter and director José Mojica Marins produced what is considered Brazil’s first horror film, À Meia-Noite Levarei Sua Alma (At Midnight I'll Take Your Soul). It introduced the character “Coffin Joe” — a small-town undertaker who is obsessed with finding the “perfect woman” to perpetuate his "continuity of the blood" — namely to bear him a superior son. The movie is a wacked-out mix of perverted Nietzschism, adolescent blasphemy and low-budget gross-out — and it was a smash hit.

Four years later, Coffin Joe returned, still on the hunt for a perfect mama for a potential Coffin Joe, Jr., in Esta Noite Encarnarei no Teu Cadáver (This Night I'll Possess Your Corpse). This time a portion of the gross-out was in bright, blood-red color and featured one of the most tripped-out visions of hell ever presented on the silver screen.

For the next 40 years, Marins continued his film career making all manner of exploitation films including Westerns, adventure films, sex comedies and horror movies that would sometimes feature cameo appearances from Coffin Joe. But it would not be until 2008 that he finally returned directly to the macabre mortician with what he called the conclusion of the Coffin Joe trilogy: Encarnação do Demônio (The Embodiment of Evil).

This 21st century take on Coffin Joe begins with his release from a prison mental ward where he has been growing his fingernails and dusting his top hat for 40 years. Met at the front gate by his faithful hunchbacked assistant, Bruno (a surefire early warning sign of possible recidivism), the pair immediately recruits a Coffin Joe fan club of four fanatical perverts who all appear to shop at the Cenobite-dimension branch of The Gap. With their help, the gruesome twosome embark on the ongoing quest for good breeding stock in an adventure that could best be described as Count Floyd’s 3D House of Torture Porn.

It’s certainly not a movie for those with a queasy stomach or the easily offended. But if you have the mettle, it is one of the most confounding sights you’ll ever see in a theatre. And what better place to view it than the blood-red dungeon of the Cult Fiction Underground at Logue’s Black Raven Emporium in East Nashville, where it will have a one-night showing tonight, at 6 p.m. and 10 p.m.

For a taste of the fun, check out the extremely NSFW trailer above, or for a tamer introduction, take a look at this brilliant American-made fan tribute parody, "The Blind Date of Coffin Joe." Now that’s a reality show I’d never miss!
