First Bite: Feast

A few weeks ago, Dana wrote about the impending opening of Feast, the “neighborhood bistro” now occupying the corner space on the bottom floor of the Fifth & Main condominium building. The restaurant officially opened last week, and I stopped in at lunch time on opening day to check it out.

Since I was visiting for lunch, I opted for lighter fare. I started with the (vegan!) spring roll appetizer, which had a really nice chili sauce with just the right amount of kick. For my main course, I had the house salad. I’m glad a friend of mine pointed this salad out to me, because I typically skip right over any part of the menu that includes the words, “house salad.” I have been conditioned to believe that its definition is “iceberg lettuce, tasteless tomatoes, shredded carrots, stale croutons and honey mustard dressing.” I guess I’ve spent too much time in “casual dining” and “casual steakhouse” restaurants over the years.

But this salad is different. There is butter lettuce! Baby greens! Jicama! Pecans! Planks of quinoa croquette! And I topped it with a house-made honey-miso dressing that is really fantastic. A good dressing can make or break a salad. Though I think this salad could easily be as good with a simple vinaigrette or no dressing at all.

There are several other salads to try, but this might just be the one that keeps me crossing the river to come back. And for something heavier, there are flatbreads, sandwiches (a BLGT looks tempting, minus the B), and dinner-sized entrees (including a several seafood and other omnivorous options). When I visit at dinner, though, I will probably skip the entrée pasta and order a trio of sides instead. Gorgonzola mac and cheese is very tempting. And the rainbow chard (because I refuse to prepare chard at home; too much work for too little yield).

I skipped dessert during my lunch visit, but I had a chance to try the bread pudding during a preview event. It’s remarkable not only for being prepared with chocolate croissants, but also for being topped with caramel and a orange crème anglaise. It is truly a treat, though — admittedly — I’m a huge fan of the pairing of chocolate and orange.

The restaurant also has a full bar, which is now open to the dining room (it was closed off previously), so there’s even more light and energy in the dining room during the daylight hours. The wine list includes a nice list of popular and accessible wines, but the big news is the beer list. All but one of the draft beers are locally brewed (Yazoo, Fat Bottom, Turtle Anarchy, Jackalope) and there are a number of craft beers, high gravity beers and popular favorites on the menu, all at reasonable prices. Details are still being worked out, but there are plans for happy hour specials in the works.

Feast is open every day of the week, so keep that in mind when you want a nice place to dine out on Mondays. It also has the same garage parking that I appreciated when Germantown Café East occupied the space. There are also still two patios to choose from, though the front patio is a bit loud from traffic. The side patio in the breezeway offers a fantastic view of downtown.
