Music City Festival and BBQ Championship Returns to Riverfront Park for Third Year

Later this month the wonderful aroma of smoking wood and cooking pork will again waft across downtown Nashville as the third edition of the Music CIty Festival and BBQ Championship takes place Aug. 26 and 27 at Riverfront Park. Organizers promise a better event than ever (which will be a trick considering how much fun the past two were.) They are bringing back your favorite parts of the festival including live music on the Grand Ole Porker Main Stage, KCBS, MBN and People's Choice barbecue competitions and the Backyard/Amateur division all competing for over $20,000 in prize money. This is one of the rare events that allows teams to compete in both the Memphis Barbecue Network and Kansas City BBQ Society, so expect some great pitmasters to participate.

New this year is the Corporate Challenge, where local businesses are encouraged to set up a tent, decorate it with piggy goodness, hire a band, hang a disco ball and throw the best damned party for their employees and customers on Friday night while the pros are working hard applying smoke to meat. Judges will choose whose soiree was tops and honor them on Saturday with an award of a custom guitar trophy from Gibson and the title of Party Kings. Having spent a few Friday nights with some smoker teams I can assure you that some of the best fun at a barbecue festival occurs after the gates have closed to the public. This sounds like it could be a heckuva good time.

The headliners for Friday night's music are The Marshall Tucker Band. While they may be down to just one original member and maybe a few roadies who were around when the Caldwell boys were playing the Hillbilly jazz that dragged me through many a homesick night while I was in college in a foreign country (Northern California), they still promise to put on a great show. Saturday features country legend Ronnie Milsap and The Music City Car Show.

Loud music, fancy cars, barbecue ... it sounds like a dream weekend to me. For more info or to buy your tickets in advance, point your curly tail toward the .
