Who Knew We Nashvillians Were So Badass When It Comes to Liquids?

Apparently the rest of the world knew, because several local manufacturers and distributors have been recognized of late for their libations. Let me catch you up with all the good news.

On the nonalcoholic front, everybody's favorite grade school field trip location, Purity Dairies, recently competed in the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wis., and took home four-first place awards. No other dairy has won this many awards in the history of the competition. They defeated a record 655 competitors to win the milk, no fat cottage cheese, sour cream and Philly vanilla ice cream categories. Take that, ya' buncha Wisconsin Cheeseheads!

Speaking of something else they like in Wisconsin, our local beer masters at Yazoo Brewing Company recently brought home a silver medal from the Great American Beer Festival in Denver. Their smoked imperial porter "Sue" finished second behind the venerable Alaskan Smoked Porter. That's pretty high cotton, for sure. Congrats to our friends (and neighbors) at Yazoo. Keep pumping out the good stuff.

Even though they are actually new to Nashville, we feel like we've known the geniuses behind Corsair Artisan Distillery for years, and we certainly claim them as our own. Especially when they win big awards like the Gold Medal they received for their gin at last spring's San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Made in very small batches using their hand-hammered gin-head pot still, Corsair's gin offers botanicals that stood the judges on their ears. Or more accurately, their noses.

If you'd like to sample some of Corsair's best, make a trip up to Hendersonville tonight to September's restaurant for a tasting of Corsair spirits along with pairings provided by the restaurant's chef/owner, September Norman. Here's the menu:

Finally, we should also recognize some of our friends who have been hailed as the best in their field when it comes to creating, mixing and serving some of the above mentioned liquids. The October issue of GQ Magazine lists their choices for the top 25 cocktail bars in America. Coming in at No. 12 is our very own Patterson House — and their corporate cousin, The Violet Hour in Chicago, hit the list at No. 3. The editors at GQ found out what we Nashvillians have known for quite a while now when they wrote:

More than any dive or honky-tonk, the Patterson House reminds drinkers that when you're in the South, you're on sacred ground: America's Bourbon Belt. The library-themed haunt is named after the saintly governor who fought Prohibition. Shame he never got to try Vincent's Ruin, made with Bulleit bourbon, elderflower liqueur, lemon, and an absinthe rinse, or the Reelfoot, a Manhattan variant using both sweet and dry vermouth.
